A little bit of History

   El Rincon Musical Boricua

All begun in February 2000 when a friend returned from Peru and introduced me to a site dedicated to Peruvian music (musicaperuana.com). My wife is Peruvian and I noticed how proud she and her mother were that there was a place in the internet dedicated to make the world know that there was no need to be a technologically and financially rich country to create from the heart and soul and share the creative spirit.

My reaction at the time was one of confidence. Having been raised in the island of Puerto Rico with music in the morning, music at noon and music in the evening I didn't think that a Peruvian music site in the internet was such a big deal. After all, I reasoned, there are probably many sites dedicated to the music of Puerto Rico. Music was such a part of the Puerto Rican psyche that I couldn't imagine an internet without abundant Puerto Rican music. That was before I set out to look for Puerto Rican music sites in the internet.

By mid spring however, my opinion had undergone a full metamorphosis. Having spent months searching for Puerto Rican music sites I had come to the conclusion that there was a dearth of them. Aside from the sites that Luciano, Rene and William had I really didn't have much to look for. So the decision was made to try to start a new, more structured place dedicated to the music of Puerto Rico.

The first obstacle was the need to learn some Web Site design. Web surfing and web site designing is not the same. I started with the inspiration from the Peruvian music site and some tips from Cesar, which is a site designer but was not interested at the time in working in this project.

In the Summer the site was registered and the tasc of begining to assemble it was begun. By Fall I contacted Rene and Luciano and they responded with interest to the project and granted permission to use their music. Then by the beginning of winter I contacted William and he also was interested in the project.

Then I sent Cesar's mother a zip copy of the first edition for translation to Spanish and this proved to be a double hit. She started the translation and Cesar started editing the site.

A year letter, we offered this our Boricua Musical Corner. Hopefully the Spanish version will be ready soon and more pages will be added to the site. We have just begun to explore the universe of Puerto Rican music, to educate ourselves and others about this aspect of our identity as a nation and to dislodge some common myths propagated by those interested in taking credit for our the product of the creativity of our people.

If you can support this GREAT PUERTO RICAN PROJECT, as a sponsor, collaborator, advisor, critic, artist, musician, historian, etc., join us. Together we can make this Puerto Rican web page be more visible and reach Puerto Ricans in every corner of the planet.

Viva Puerto Rico !!!!!
